  Law Enforcement Role And Authority

Sullivan County Sheriff's Office receives its legally mandated authority from the New Hampshire Constitution, Part #2 Article 71, and additionally from the New Hampshire revised Statutes Annotated, (RSA) section {104:6}. All High Sheriffs or the elected official of the county are authorized to appoint deputies to assist in carrying out the duties mandated by the laws of the United States, the State of New Hampshire, and local ordinances.

High Sheriffs are the chief law enforcement officer of their respective counties. They are responsible for assuring the effectiveness of each Sheriff's Office, while providing the public with the high level of service they expect.

Every sworn deputy is required to take an oath of office to uphold the laws and the Constitution of the United States and the State of New Hampshire. This oath is administered by the Sheriff.

Roles and day to day operations of each Sheriff's Office differ from county to county. In Sullivan County the Sheriff's Office has taken on a proactive approach to law enforcement through marked rural patrols, educational functions and expert support of local law enforcement initiatives.

Investigations of criminal activity is a growing field for the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office. Every deputy possess specialized skills in various fields of criminal investigations. As the demand on local law enforcement grows, the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office is taking an ever increasing role in promoting public safety and crime prevention through quality investigations.

Faith in the performance of the Sheriff's Office is confirmed every two years when the position of High Sheriff comes up for election.

Fundamentally, the Sheriff's Office is the one place any citizen can turn to for help, regardless of stature or compromise.
